Hi All,

Well maybe winter is finally over. The snow we did get melted quickly. If you are planning on coming out this way I have a little information for you. One of our employees was hiking on the trail in back of the base area and came upon a moose carcus. He actually did see a wolf and there were many bear tracks around the animal as well. The bear track was another three to four inches longer than his foot. Conservation was called to ribbon and sign the area but didn't find the carcus. It is still there though as we took pictures of it again today as well as pictures of bear tracks by the bridge. Neelless to say you need to be very careful if you're out and about. Another little trivia fact is that there are four grizzlies in the immediate Beaver Mines area. So far as we know they have eaten a cow, calf and yearling so Fish and Wildlife have put out traps. One of the neighbors put out a vision camera and got some fantastic pictures of them eating the cow. There was also a wolf and bald eagle in the photos. After the snowfall there were cougar tracks all around a residence in Beaver Mines. At our house we have a resident  moose that has moved in and beds down against the front of the house at night. What busy wildlife activity, never a dull moment. Anyway, that's the news from here. Have a great weekend.

Happy Spring,

K

Hi All,

I forgot one thing in my newsletter last week. The geese are back and on the road as usual. This year there are three pairs by the wet lands but today, sadly, one of them got hit by a car. It's really sad because they mate for life. Please drive slowly and tell your friends and the rest of your family about the geese.

Hi All

An interesting story about the geese, the one goose that lost it's partner in early spring has moved in with another family and has taken over the roll of nanny/security gaurd. If you pass them on the road the family heads for the water and she stands on the road and hisses at you with her wings up. Please drive carefully so as not to hit them. Four of the nine babies are left. There is a cinnamon bear on Jelly Roll and I saw a grizzly in the ditch by the shop road so take care it's that time of year.

Have a good weekend,

K

July 7/2010

Hi All

Hope things are going well and that your summer progresses nicely. Just a quick note to let you know The T-Bar Pub is now open on weekends and holidays, 3 to 10 on Friday, 3 to 10 on Saturday and 11 to 4 on Sunday. Drop by and feast on an original thin crust pizza or try out some of our wing specials. On the wildlife side, a large cougar was spotted 100 meters away in the east end of the RV Park so take care and caution. Please watch for our small wildlife crossing in the wetlands. The gravel road has been very dusty and visibility has been really bad but communication is in the works and on going for future paving. That's it for now. Take care and have a great summer.

Hi All,

I have just a few items to run by you. Firstly we had a bear and a cougar in the base area this week. The bear was lunching on a bag of garbage and cans left outside a cabin. The cougar was eating a rabbit. This happened at dusk so the animals were not easy to see at first glance so take care  if you are out and about in the base area. The Rum Runner Days parade goes this weekend and we are looking for volunteers to help decorate and ride in the parade. The parade is Saturday July 17. We will be gathering at Sobeys parking lot in Blairmore at 9 am to decorate, judging is at 10 am and the parade starts at 11 am. Everyone is welcome to join us. We have had a lot of rain lately so the fire hazard is low but there was a lightning strike down the valley on the weekend. Enjoy your summer.

Drifter Day 2010

The annual (probably going on 11 years now !) clean up of Drifter is scheduled for Saturday, September 11, 2010, please mark this on your calendar. We plan to continue with our work that has been progressing previously down Show Down, brush again (was done at one of the very 1st Drifter Days) the route from High Plains to the slope between the drift portion of Drifter and OK Corral, and continue to work the line (Show Girl) connecting down into “Side Show” and “Being There”, this all depends on the number of volunteers.

Alternative Help - if you don’t want to work on the slope or don’t have much time, we could use help with the following:

• Driving the crew to the top of the mountain in the morning

• Picking up the crew from Cinch Traverse at the end

• Monitoring the radio during the day

Details are as follows:

• Date : Saturday, September 11, 2010

• Time : meet at 8:00 A.M., we will leave for the top of the hill by 8:30

• Meeting place : in front of the new shop

What to bring:

• lunch and water

• work gloves

• hat

• protective glasses if you have

• ear protection if you have, we'll round up some ear plugs as well

• good solid foot ware, work boots, hiking boots, etc., we will be working in rough terrain and steep slopes

• suitable clothes for rough work - no shorts

• chain saw if you have, Lewko will have some of the hill saws prepared and ready to go ( Lewko, this is your reminder ! )

• if you bring a chain saw, bring only enough gas and oil for the day, no extra, remember to bring a wrench, screw driver and file that fits your saw

The plan:

• the plan will be to have one or two helpers per saw, if you don't have a saw, we still need your muscles

• split into work groups, depends on the number we end up with

• complete work on the lower right and left sides of Show Down

• send a group down the middle of Drifter to clean up the lines we did several years back (the lines thru the trees)

• send a group to continue work on Show Girl connecting to top of “Side Show” and “Being There” and/or work the trees on the left side of Show Down

• have fun and an enjoying, satisfying day ( your knees, legs will thank you for removing the dangers that hide below these slopes as you rip up the pow this coming winter! )

• we'll have a little food and re-hydration at the end of the day

If you think of anything I've missed ( I'm sure I have missed something ), please let me know. Feel free to let me know if you can attend.

Thanks, see you on the September 11th !

I'd to thank everyone who participated in the July Invasive Weed Pull. Over 65 bags of invasive weeds were gathered, unfortunately the invasive weeds tend to have the nicest floors.

There are small coil back books in the office, for free, that describe the invasive weeds. This will be an annual event for the summer.

See you at the Huck Fest and thanks again.
