Cougar in the Area
by Andrew

Hi All,

We wanted to let everyone know that there is a cougar that is active and hanging around the resort. Very early Tuesday morning a deer was killed by a cougar immediately beside the steps of a trailer in Hambone Heights (the trailer area immediately to the south of the Castle Mountain Ski Lodge & Hostel). It was then dragged to the ditch on the east side of the un-improved road that goes from the Ski Lodge & Hostel to the bridge over the Westcastle River. John Clarke from Fish & Wildlife came out to investigate and to take the kill away. He confirmed that it was a cougar kill and he said that it was a good thing that it dragged the kill away from the trailers rather than eating it by the trailer. He noted that people should discourage deer from hanging out in the resort or close to their homes because when the deer become habituated in the resort, the cougars come looking for them. We do not want people chasing deer to scare them away but make lots of noise so that they will be less likely to hang out close to homes and trailers. Also, watch pets and small children closely, do not travel alone and always make noise when hiking or walking around. Seeing the different wildlife around the resort is a wonderful part of Castle Mountain Resort but please make sure that you are being smart when are here at the resort.

Regards

Hi Everyone

In regard to the cougar incident, Fish and Wildlife put up a motion camera and came back this morning to check it. The cougar came back the same day at 1:00 pm and again at 10:00 pm. I got to look at some of the pictures off the camera, very interesting. It was a good size cat to drag the deer across the road. It came right back to where the kill was in front of the trailer. John Clark from F&W advises caution and if you come upon it make lots of noise and be aggressive. Keep your pets and children close to home for the time being.

Have a great weekend,

K
