Get Bear Smart Now, Not When They Are Knocking On Your Door

Hi All,

Please read this feedback from Jenice Smith. She took a look around the resort last June 6 on Stewardship Day and came up with a couple of notes. The best time to get Bear Smart is right now before the season ends. If you wait until mid-June or the first visit in the summer, it will be too late.

Castle Mountain Community & Bear Smarting

From Jenice Smith (Crowsnest Conservation Society)

First off, I want to commend the Castle Mountain Community for their drive
to go Bear Smart.  During the Bear Smart inventory on Ed Gregor Day, it was
encouraging to walk through each property and see many compliant
landowners.  Garbage, which is usually a common bear attractant, was for the
most part, stored away properly, which is very encouraging.  There were also
few bird feeders and hummingbird feeders out.  On the other hand, many
residents of the community have BBQs (and some residents have more than
one).

I have done some researching to see what other communities recommend about
BBQs.

A number of Bear Smart communities recommend burning off the grill after each
use, cover the BBQ, and store in a secure location.  One of the suggestions
from Bear Aware is to leave you BBQ on high with the lid closed while you eat
supper.

This is from the Get Bear Smart Society about BBQs:

  - Burn your barbeque clean and wash immediately after use - removing all
  grease and food residues.
  - Remove and dispose of the grease in the drip can or grease tray every
  time you use your barbeque.
