Meet our Avalanche Dogs

Huck
Huck is 5 years old and became validated as a CARDA rescue dog in 2009. He plays an active role in our mountain safety program is well known and loved by locals. In his 3-year avi dog career, Huck has been on some pretty exciting adventures, but his career highlight (so far) is definitely the helicopter work he does with his trainer Darrel Lewko.

Program director Darrel Lewko says there's nothing quite like seeing Huck, ‘flying externally from the helicopter, suspended from a safety sling with me'.

Huck also hangs with Darrel on the Powder Stagecoach as an extra safety measure for cat skiers. What a life.

Avi
Avi is 11 years old and became validated as a CARDA rescue dog in 2002. Although he retired from active service in 2009, he still travels the mountain and is more than capable of searching. Avi was the first Avalanche Rescue Dog at Castle Mountain, pioneering the program with Darrel Lewko.

When he's not working, Avi is a pretty relaxed dog who loves people and goes with the flow. But when he's searching/working, he is anything but laid back. His instincts for searching are phenomenal. He is, in every sense of the word, a natural.
