Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 (AST1)
Join our partners at My Terrain to increase your awareness of avalanche safety best practices. Avalanche Skills Training Level 1 (or AST1 for short) is the course is where everyone starts, whether you are new to the backcountry or a seasoned sledder, backcountry skier, or snowboarder this course is for you. It is designed to teach backcountry enthusiasts basic avalanche safety habits, such as choosing appropriate terrain for the given conditions, resources to support developing a trip plan, recognizing avalanche terrain, and companion rescue.
Courses are held over two days with the first day (Saturday) being held in class (West Castle Lounge – upstairs in the Day Lodge). The second day (Sunday) is considered to be a field day and will be held within Castle Mountain Resort’s Powder Stagecoach Cat Skiing area. A valid season pass or Huckleberry 1 Ride ticket will be required ($10.95 – $26.95) to access this area (not included in your course fee).
Courses will be held over the following dates.
- January 15 – 16, 2022
- January 29 – 30, 2022
- February 12 – 13, 2022
Access to Castle Mountain Resort’s Day Lodge is restricted to those able to satisfy entry requirements, per the Government of Alberta’s Restriction Exemption Program. Participants of this course must be able to provide valid:
- proof of vaccination, or
- proof of a privately-paid negative rapid test result taken within 72 hours of service, or
- documentation of a medical exemption
